Federal Association "German Youth in Europe"

The Federal Association "German Youth in Europe" (djo – Deutsche Jugend in Europa) was founded on November 4, 1951 using the name "German Youth of the East" (Deutsche Jugend des Ostens – djo) by young German immigrants and refugees from Eastern Europe acting as a non-party and non-confessional youth association.

The "German Youth in Europe" is the umbrella organization of 12 states djos and 10 federal migrant youth associations.

The main areas of djo work:

  • Integration work (including financing projects of youth organizations of migrants at the expense of the Federal Child and Youth Plan), 
  • Education of youth in the field of culture,
  • International youth exchange (including youth meetings, advanced training and internships for organizers of international youth exchanges), 
  • Working with young refugees.

Within the framework of international cooperation the "German Youth in Europe" implements youth projects with the countries of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. The principle of the organization's international youth work is to promote intercultural education of children and youth, the key focus is on the study of regional culture and the problems of ethnic minorities.

The "German Youth in Europe" is a member of the German Federal Youth Council.

The cooperation of the Federal Association "German Youth in Europe" with Russia was carried out until 2022 in the framework of partnership with the Interregional Public Organization "German Youth Association" (Jugendring der Russlanddeutschen).
