Pan African Youth Union (the PYU)

The Pan African Youth Union (the PYU) is a movement bringing together youth associations on the African continent*.

The Pan African Youth Union is headquartered in Morocco.

The Union is the successor to the Pan African Youth Movement created on April 26, 1962 in Guinea, Conakry at the initiative of the heads of state with the aim of mobilizing youth for the decolonization of Africa.

Goals of the Pan African Youth Union:

  • strive to inform, mobilize and build the capacity of youth in Africa so that they can actively participate in the processes of economic, social, political and cultural development on the continent, 
  • to defend and advance the process of democratic development in Africa, 
  • to ensure respect for and effective implementation of the African Youth Charter and other instruments developed by the African Union, in particular the instruments for youth, 
  • to act as a facilitator of the regional economic communities, the African Union Commission and UN agencies and other partners on issues concerning African youth mainly in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of national youth policies in Africa, 
  • ensure synergy among African youth organizations to promote, develop and implement the African Youth Charter, 
  • to strengthen and develop partnerships with national, regional and international NGOs and African civil society in general, in line with the principles of the Pan-African Youth Union, 
  • to strengthen and consolidate international partnership and cooperation within the framework of youth movement.

In 2017 at the UN Headquarters in New York a Cooperation Agreement was signed between the National Youth Council of Russia and the Pan African Youth Union.

In 2020 at the invitation of the Pan African Youth Union a delegation of the National Youth Council of Russia visited Sudan, where the union's headquarters were located at that time. As a result of the visit agreements were reached on the creation of a permanent platform for interaction and maintaining contacts between young people and youth associations of Russia and African states, namely the Russia-Africa Youth Public Forum.
